So what has the 1st Kettering Scout Group been up to in July?

  • the Squirrel Drey, our youngest section, has been busy. On July 4th, the Drey celebrated Independence Day with the family of one of our American members organising a brilliant meeting. The Squirrels took part in a rather wet Sports Evening, with egg and spoon, skipping and running races – as well as team activities. Eleven of our Squirrels joined the first County Squirrel Scurry at JLC, where our Squirrels were introduced to tunnelling, archery, the bouldering wall, den building, backwoods cooking and the assault course, and were complimented by the County Scout Chairman on being the most engaged and listening group!
  • our Beaver Colony spent a night practicing knots ready for the Beaver Knots Badge, then as part of their creative challenge spent a night making spinners, then trying them out outside on the Woodcroft Lawns … yes, some worked better than others. The term finished in gloriously wet style with a water activities night.
  • the Pack started July by making water bomb ballistas, followed by an indoor evening making individual pizzas to avoid the rain. The term finished with a gentle water activities night on Woodcroft Lawns, and a fond farewell to Akela and Raksha as they completed their 150 meetings. The Cub Pack Leadership will take a new form in the Autumn, with all leaders taking roles in managing the pack, with Becky heading the Thursday meetings
  • the Scouts have been busy too – we started with a Scout Law Wide game around the Market Place, then took to Woodcroft Lawns for mop hockey and water fight, before spending an evening preparing for Troop Camp. Our team of Harry, Charles, Isaac and Connor won the District’s Gateway Competition at the District Camping Competition, and we ran another kayak session on the River Nene on a pleasant Sunday afternoon. Our Annual Troop Camp was run at Wadenhoe, taking away 18 Scouts (as well as 1 visiting Squirrel Scout!) to go rafting, swimming at Thrapston followed by a hike home, and gliding to 1,200’ with the Welland Gliding Club. After a clearing up session, we too have now hibernated for the summer…
