So having come out of our Christmas hibernation, what have our sections been up to this month?

– there are a few new faces at our Squirrel Drey – for not only have several Squirrels moved on to our Beaver Colony, Paprika and her Team have brought in as many as the Drey can hold from the Waiting List to bring the Drey back to 24 again. This month, the Drey started back by talking about our five senses – of touch, sound, sight, smell and the good taste to be in the 1st Kettering Squirrel Drey – then celebrated Burns Night with some Burns poetry, eating shortbread and holding our own indoor Highland Games. We spent another evening talking to our 4-6 year olds about our world, and where on the earth our fruit comes from.

– the Beavers came back to spend an evening agreeing the Beaver Code of conduct and playing Beaver Games like crab football, and elephant football. The next night was spent in achieving the Experiment Badge in one night – learning about electronics with Cairo’s “hot wires” kit, as well as learning what salt does to ice. The Beavers have started their Global Challenge, hearing and learning foreign languages, how Beavers should keep their Beaver promise, thinking about endangered species – making their own pet turtles from paper and card – and learning how to reduce waste.

–  our Cub Pack started the term agreeing what each Cub would need to do to achieve their Personal Challenges, before spending an evening celebrating Burns Night, and making their own carvings from bars of soap as part of their Creative Challenge. The last meeting of the month was spent in Reaching for the Stars, and reaching towards their Astronomer Badges – learning about the moon, and making a plan of the planets, then using Hathi’s telescope to look at Jupiter hovering miles above Woodcroft.

– the Scouts returned for a slide show of photos of what the Troop got up to last year, before spending an evening using pioneering skills to make our own bucketball stands to compete in the Bucketball World Series. The patrols spent two meetings first sorting themselves out for the Cooking Contest, then inviting Chili from the Squirrel Drey to judge them competing for the Revd Smith Trophy – five lovely meals were cooked offered, with the Lions winning by a nose. 13 of our Scouts took part with Scouts from three other troops in the “Creative Challenge in a Day” Day in Desborough, with a total of 48 Scouts gaining their challenges, five are working through their Writer Activity Badges, and we have a team preparing for the District’s Leader Trophy … watch this space next month to find out how they got on …
