So what has our Group been up to in May?
- the Squirrel Drey, our starter section for 4 – 6 year olds, took part in the Disney Encanto Badge in May, when the Squirrel Scouts made their own community library. Next week, they were straight into finishing the Squirrel Superhero Badge. The last meeting of the month involved the Drey members making butter … do you remember being 5 when everything was a great adventure?!
- our Beaver Colony, the next section for 6 to 8 year olds, started May preparing for the King’s Coronation by making red, white and blue wavers, then playing games with a royal twist (“King Charles says” …. Simon being put aside for the night!). In our next night we prepared for an investiture of our new Beaver Scouts (some from our Squirrel Drey, others joining from outside) with games and activities based on the Beaver Scout promise, then spent the next evening being all arty and crafty for the Beaver Creative Challenge. An evening spent learning archery and playing with nerf guns ended the half term.
- our Cub Pack, the section for 8 – 10 year olds, started May with a Royal Coronation tea party, then spent the next meeting focussed on the Road safety Badge, walking safely and learning around the streets near Woodcroft … and finishing up in Ben’s Chip Shop! The walking at next meeting was even further – with a gentle Night Hike between JLC and Rushton – before the Cub Scouts spent the night learning how to light fires back at the JLC.
- finally, the Scout Troop for 10 – 14 year olds …. many of the older Scouts completed the last of the nine activities for the World Challenge this month – we think the most involved challenge the Scouts face – by learning about what happens to our rubbish when we throw it out, before spending a Saturday morning visiting the Rookery South Energy from Waste plant – breath-taking in scale! The next meeting we marooned the Scouts on a Woodcroft Desert Island, each patrol provided with a bag of bits, then setting them challenges. A quiet Tuesday night was spent backwoods cooking at JLC, before we spent our half term night refreshing the pioneering, preparing to go rafting in June. Two of our PLs – Harry and Matthew – spent a day in finding an aeroplane wreck site (about the size of your bathroom) in the middle of Bleaklow Moor to prove their navigation skills for their Personal Skills Challenge, and now have one more task to complete their Chief Scouts Gold Award, the highest award the 1st Kettering Scout Group makes … watch this space!
